ANDREW SMITH, PREVIOUS STUDENT AT THE SCHOOL AND OXFORD UNIVERSITY GRADUATE BECOMES YOUNGEST QC IN BRITAIN

Andrew Smith QC

Former Pupil, Andrew Smith QC, a leading criminal barrister at St Philips Chambers in Birmingham has been honoured with the highest legal accolade today as he was officially sworn in as Queen's Counsel at the Palace of Westminster.

At only 37 years old and having been called in 1997, Andrew is the youngest barrister to be appointed this year and, more impressively, becomes the youngest ever criminal silk in England and Wales. In an incredibly strong competition only 88 QC's have been appointed this year, which is around 40 less then previous years, which makes the achievement all the more remarkable.

AN AMAZING EFFORT

South Nottinghamshire Academy raised £1,178.33 from our non-uniform day, Sports Relief Day and the rowing event, all money was donated to Sport Relief. In addition, we have also donated £100 to the Red Admiral Fund which is a cancer charity and £100 to the Sixth Form Fund.

GARETH EXCELS ON WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAMME

South Nottinghamshire Academy Year 11 Student, Gareth Mullarkey, spent four days over the Easter Holidays with Nottingham Forest, taking part in the N Power What's Your Goal work experience programme.

This is a national programme which many of the country's football clubs sponsor. This opportunity was offered to the Yr 10 and Yr 11 pupils taking the Sport Diploma and Gareth was the only pupil who applied from South Nottinghamshire Academy.

During the week, Gareth assisted with Sports Coaching at the Forest Holiday club, he learnt about the many job roles in the club and on Thursday he met Ed Milliband, who was visiting the club to open their new Study Centre. Gareth was interviewed by Central News.

At South Nottinghamshire Academy, we are very proud of his efforts. Lawrie Dudfield, Community Manager at NFFC said that Gareth was the best of the 5 who were involved in the programme. Well done Gareth.
